A change in the rhythm of a family's life and the needs of its members naturally leads to a metamorphosis of the interior of the house. Joanna and Janek recently found this out. The stay-at-home mother and grown-up son decided to refresh the design of their two-storey flat. By cleverly dividing the space, they achieved comfortable private areas, without forgetting a place for communal activities.

The first-floor flat of our protagonists, although bright and spacious, has over time become overgrown with a large number of objects. Green plants, sentimental heirlooms and books full of history meant that they had to take new care with functional storage. The changes were also helped by the new rhythm of the household members' lives. Janek had recently started university, and the pandemic meant that Joanna started doing most of her professional duties from home. The VOXBOX programme proved to be an invaluable support when renovating the space of their two-storey flat.

The comfortable living room in a bunkhouse and its superpower

The living room is a space that plays a similar function in almost every home: it facilitates the members of the household being together. In addition to moments of closeness, however, everyone needs moments to themselves. The Slide sofa helped maintain a healthy balance for the mother and son, who spent days together during the pandemic reality. The piece of furniture has been designed so that the seating arrangement can be changed freely to suit activities both together and separately.

"It may sound funny, but this liberal sofa saved our relationship. Being together every day in a several-decade-old flat, we were looking for a bit of privacy even in a shared space like the living room. Thanks to the two-sided sofa, each of us can now get on with our own things - while I'm finishing the latest translations and Janek is looking through the latest drawings, we forget that we're right next to each other. The Slide sofa also fits perfectly into the open space. It cleverly separated the lounge area from the dining area, which was something I really wanted," explains Joanna.

The new design for the two-storey flat also included replacing the table, which was not only too small, but also badly worn out. The homeowners chose a model from the Creative system, which they configured with their needs in mind. To bring more colour into the interior, they opted for a green top and black legs. The extending table will prove useful not only for meals with a larger group, but also for Asia's creative work.

Joanna made sure that she had everything she needed close at hand. This is why books and essential aids were placed against the wall near the work surface. This was made possible by replacing the RTV cupboard with a bookcase, which had previously been a decorative feature of the bedroom. Now it stood in the living room and provided plenty of valuable storage space. After work, Janek's mother can relax with a pleasant read while observing the nice view of the terrace. Maximum comfort is ensured for her by the Banco swivel armchair with footrest positioned right next to the window.

A room for special tasks: where relaxation meets work

After moving the bookcase and armchair to the living room, Joanna's bedroom regained some space that could be used again. The room was therefore fitted with a wide chest of drawers and a Creative dressing table, which will serve as a small desk. A private corner for reading or computer work will work especially well when our heroine needs quiet and concentration. The Shell chair with its comfortable seat will allow her to stay in the world of her own thoughts for hours on end.

The main storage area has become a wardrobe with a capacious interior. The Creative system's ability to configure the layout of shelves, drawers and hanger rails allowed the wardrobe to be tailored perfectly to the wardrobe owner's needs. Joanna's extra clothes can be stored in the 4-door wardrobe with double extensions, which was placed in the hallway during the refreshing of the first-floor flat project.

The lack of a bookcase did not mean that the bedroom lacked space for favourite books or trinkets, which give the whole interior a personal touch. The Doppio pouffe has become a place to store a soft blanket and a decorative cushion. Thanks to its double-sided age, the piece of furniture can function both as a bedside table and as a seating area.

Design of a two-level flat for mother and son

A two-storey flat in a block of flats has been cleverly divided into two suites, whose boundary is defined only by a visually light staircase and the different needs of the occupants. The room on the first floor, which until recently was the micro world of a high school student, has taken on a completely adult character with the help of a few changes. The star of the room was the Creative desk with metal legs, which enchanted the architecture student with its aesthetics.

Being able to configure my own desk was a hit with me. Not only could I choose the colour of the body or the legs, but I could also place capacious drawers under the top. The saffron colour caught my eye so much that I couldn't imagine my room without it," recalls Janek.

The narrow couch was replaced by a larger bed and the corner desk was replaced by a new yellow bookcase. The existing storage system made up of Young Users furniture worked so well that our protagonist did not want to change it. Only the fronts of the cabinets were slightly modified. Thanks to removable covers, Janek was able to get rid of the childish motifs and replace them with black and white.

Two-storey flat in a block of flats - plan your dream makeover

Changes in interior design, just like life changes, do not have to be difficult. It is enough to plan them well. In order to make the design of a split-level flat fit our current needs, a small metamorphosis is often enough instead of a real revolution. It is worth making this process easier by using the free interior design and decoration platform VOXBOX.

Already at the design stage, we will find out what our flat will look like after the changes. Realistic visualisations will allow us to test various wall finishes, furniture configurations or placement of accessories. Ordering the necessary items is just a click away. To get inspired, we can use a database of ready-made designs, and in search of support - make an appointment with an advisor in one of the VOX stores.
